Your Main Uses
The best way to decide on a blender size is to consider what you typically use a blender for. If you plan on using the blender for making mixed drinks with friends, it will probably be most convenient to select a blender which can make a few drinks at once. Typically, a 48 ounce blender, which can whip up four 12 ounce frozen drinks in one go, will be a good choice for many amateur mixologists. If you use a blender frequently when cooking, such as for blending salsas, soups, and sauces, an even larger size may be convenient for its ability to blend a whole batch of butternut squash soup or pico de gallo at once.
Larger blenders not only have a larger capacity, they are likely to be heavier-duty, with more built-in horsepower. This is an important factor to look at if you often blend thick concoctions or if you need your blender to be able to break up ice cubes.
What will you primarily use the blender for? If you're planning on using it for small things such as one or two drinks on occasion, then a smaller jug size would probably work. In addition, since it will be just the right size for those kinds of jobs, it will also deter you from making too much when you don't need any more. Having some leftovers is alright, but not if it will just be wasteful.
Larger Jugs for Social Events
If you're planning on using it for bigger jobs such as drinks for a party, soups, a batch of smoothies, gravy and more, then bigger sizes would be best for your needs. If you're at all unsure about what you will be using the blender for, then it is probably best to get a slightly larger one. Medium sized might be in your comfort zone if you're entirely unsure, but it's best to go a little bigger than a little smaller when it comes to blending.
Enough Storage Space?
You need to make sure you have adequate storage space for the blender. Blenders don't usually take up much space, but larger ones can seem pretty bulky and may be an eyesore on your counter due to their size. Also, large blenders with glass jugs can be slightly heavy, which can make moving it on a regular basis somewhat troublesome. If you have plenty of storage space on your counter, a large blender, no matter the materials it is made of, can sit on your counter top without needing to be constantly moved.
If, however, you don't have the proper counter space, a large blender with a plastic jug can be perfect. They can be easily stored in a cabinet and can be moved more freely then a heavy glass jug.
Planning ahead before any purchase is always a good idea. Taking a few minutes out to really think about what size you need beforehand can save you the hassle of returning it later. With just a couple of questions to ask yourself while shopping, you can buy the perfect sized blender for your home.
If you're considering a handheld immersion blender, the size considerations are a little different. Immersion blenders work better for some applications than others, but can handle a batch of any size. That being the case, look for the lightest model which meets your price point and horsepower requirements. Some immersion blenders are available in multiple arm lengths. Longer models work best when cooking for a crowd, but can be too awkward for home use.
Considering Warranty Attached To a Blender
On any given day of the calendar year, millions of consumers are offered warranties on appliances and products. People are often divided on whether or not to plunk down the additional cash to purchase a warranty, and the ultimate decision is often an impulse one based on the buyer's financial situation at the moment. In the case of a small but incredibly useful appliance such as a blender, buying a warranty is a decision that should be made by an informed mind. Here are the pros and cons.
Pros of a Warranty
When purchasing a blender, few people realize just how big a role it can play in everyday activities, especially on the weekends. On rare occasions, blenders sit for months in the cabinet in which they were originally placed, unused and unloved. But for the masses that enjoy cranking up the blades and processing food and drink into their favorite cocktails and sauces, the contraptions are worth their weight in gold, and insuring them with a warranty is a very good idea.
When parties hit full throttle many different hands often touch the blender, utilizing it to mix up ice and turn a rough cocktail into a smooth blended drink. In these situations, people aren't always aware of the workings and limitations of a blender, and sometimes fill the bowl with more ice than the torque of the blades can handle, or worse, insert items that simply aren't meant to be inside of a blender.
What often results is chipped blades or burnt out motors, both of which are virtual death sentences for a blender. When these unfortunate and unintentional situations arise, having a warranty can turn a sticky situation into a solved problem.
Cons of a Warranty
Many hard working people already have enough expenses without adding a small handful of cash to every purchase in order to secure a warranty. The truth is that some of the problems that may arise while using your blender will be covered by the manufactures policies, which often include replacing a unit free of charge if it has malfunctioned. When it comes to problems that arise with your blender that are not any fault of your own, paying for a warranty would essentially be purchasing the same coverage twice.
As is the case with many optional purchases, buying a warranty for a blender should have a lot to do with how often you plan on using the device, and what for. If you suspect that the demands of your kitchen and night life are such that the blades will be spinning on a regular basis, then securing a backup plan in case of any unforeseen circumstances is an excellent choice.
Considering the Power Output of a Blender
You can spend hundreds of dollars on a blender or find a product that will suit your needs for less than fifty dollars. The features that are available range from the simple three speed blenders to those that can serve as food processors. The differences of the power output may or may not influence you purchasing decision. It all depends on the type of blender that you want to buy and the tasks that your new blender will have to perform.
Matching Power to Your Needs
Most counter top blenders feature a power output of between 300 and 500 watts. Some of the high performance blenders go higher, but the wattage does not always mean that they will perform better. It all depends on what you are going to use your blender for. For a cook that will be using the blender as a food processor, more power will be needed to chop up vegetables like raw carrots than will be needed to puree cooked foods. If the blender has an attachment that will be used to prepare bread dough, more power will be needed than if it will simply be used to prepare a smoothie.
Horsepower and Watts
Some manufacturers of blenders with higher power will list the horsepower instead of the watts. In order to understand how powerful your blender will be, you will have to do a simple conversion. One electrical horse power is equivalent to 746 watts.
There is a difference between peak horse power and rated horse power. Peak horse power is the highest that the motor will perform. It is never expected that an appliance will run at peak horse power for any length of time. In fact, the number can represent the horse power of the motor in the second that it starts up, before the blades even begin to work. It only indicates the highest range of power, but if the blades aren't spinning at this time no work is getting done.
Peak horse power can also be advertised as maximum power. If you are looking for the most powerful blender that you can buy because you will be using it for heavy duty tasks, don't be mislead by a higher peak horse power. Look instead for the rated horse power. This number will indicate the continuous power output the blender will run at without causing any harm to the motor.
When you are looking for the most powerful blender than you can buy, compare the wattage. If the blender only lists peak horse power, you can find the wattage with the UL rating of the motor. The information is usually in the specification.
Considering the Cost of a Blender
There are many things to consider about the price of a blender. The most important thing is to not choose a blender based only on price! Yet, many people do just this. If you shop for a blender and choose a model based only on price, you will most certainly be disappointed.
It is true that the least expensive models usually have fewer options than the more expensive models. You may be able to get by with a cheaper model that has fewer capabilities if they are missing the functions that you don't usually need. Also, it could be said that purchasing an expensive model with many options that you do not use is a waste of money.
This is why you should make a list of things that you want in a blender before you visit the store to shop for appliances.
Justifying the Cost
In some cases, you may notice a difference in price between models that have similar options. In this case, you should look to see why there is a difference in price. Sometimes, one model may be made with better materials. Sometimes, the name of the appliance brand can cause the difference in the price. If you plan on using your blender regularly, you should purchase the better quality model even if the price is a little bit higher. On the other hand, if you will not be using your blender regularly, you may be able to use the lesser quality model without any problems.
Cost and Warranty
Sometimes, the price of a blender may be higher if there is a warranty. Many manufacturers offer a limited warranty or guarantee on their products. If possible, you should try to purchase a product with a guarantee or warranty even if it is more expensive. A product warranty will make it easy to replace your blender if it should break.
If the blender that you purchase offers a warranty, carefully read the warranty information before discarding your receipt or your packaging. In some cases, you may need to save the receipt from the purchase. You may also need to save the bar code off the blender box. In other cases, you may need to register your blender with the company in order to receive full coverage if the blender should break.
One last thing to consider about the cost of the blender is the availability of customer service. If you have a problem assembling your blender or if you are missing a part, you will need to contact a customer service agent for assistance. Some companies do not offer such services and you may need to send the product back to get a new blender. Many companies have a good customer service team and can take care of any product problems quickly and efficiently.
As you can see, there are many things to consider about the price of a blender. It's not always just a case of going for the cheapest to save money - the price that a blender has been given is for a reason and it's important to investigate why.
